Industrial Bathroom Style

Industrial style is the most confident of the six, and it is not for every house. Where it works, it works emphatically: loft conversions, warehouse-style spaces, and the newer builds around the NoHo Arts District and Culver City where the architecture already has some edge to it. The appeal is honesty. Materials are left visible rather than wrapped in trim, and the structure of the room becomes part of the design.

In practice that means exposed brick or a concrete-effect finish on at least one wall, black-framed shower glass in a grid or crittall pattern, and open metal shelving in place of closed cabinetry. Fixtures are matte black or gunmetal, often with exposed pipework treated as a feature rather than something to conceal. Concrete or terrazzo vanity tops, Edison-style or caged lighting, and a restrained palette of charcoal, raw timber, and off-white hold it together.

Exposed does not mean unfinished. Genuine brick in a wet area needs sealing, and a concrete-effect wall in a shower still needs a full waterproofing membrane behind it, since the look of raw material and the performance of a bathroom are two separate jobs.
