Mediterranean Bathroom Style

Mediterranean design belongs in Los Angeles in a way few other styles do. The Spanish Colonial and Mission homes across the Valley and the Westside were built for this language of arches, warm plaster, and patterned tile, and a Mediterranean bathroom in one of these houses reads as though it has always been there rather than as a recent addition.

The style is built on warmth. Terracotta and honed travertine underfoot, hand-painted cement or Talavera tile as a feature wall or vanity backsplash, and wrought iron used sparingly in mirrors, sconces, and shower hardware. Arched niches and softened corners replace the hard rectangles of contemporary design. The palette stays in the range of ochre, clay, cream, and deep blue-green, and the overall effect is a room that feels cool and calm in summer without feeling cold.

There is a practical side to getting this right. Patterned tile needs a considered layout so the pattern lands correctly at the edges rather than being cut awkwardly at the wall.
