About the Mediterranean Bathroom Style
Mediterranean design belongs in Los Angeles in a way few other styles do. The Spanish Colonial and Mission homes across the Valley and the Westside were built for this language of arches, warm plaster and patterned tile, and a Mediterranean bathroom in one of these houses reads as though it has always been there rather than as a recent addition.
The style is built on warmth. Terracotta and honed travertine underfoot, hand-painted cement or Talavera tile as a feature wall or vanity backsplash, and wrought iron used sparingly in mirrors, sconces and shower hardware. Arched niches and softened corners replace the hard rectangles of contemporary design. The palette stays in the range of ochre, clay, cream and deep blue-green, so the room feels cool and calm in summer without feeling cold.
There is a practical side to getting this right. Patterned tile needs a considered layout so the pattern lands correctly at the edges rather than being cut awkwardly at the wall. Unglazed terracotta and natural stone need proper sealing to survive a wet room. KN Remodeling handles the tile layout drawings, the sealing schedule and the waterproofing beneath it all, so the character of your Mediterranean bathroom does not come at the cost of durability.
What Defines a Mediterranean Bathroom
- Terracotta and honed travertine flooring
- Hand-painted cement and Talavera tile
- Arched niches and softened wall details
- Wrought iron mirrors, sconces and hardware
- Warm ochre, clay and deep blue-green palettes
- Proper sealing for natural and unglazed surfaces
Mediterranean Bathroom Design Ideas
These are the ideas we see work best in Los Angeles homes:
- Talavera feature wall: hand-painted tile behind the vanity or inside the shower.
- Arched shower entry: a soft curve that instantly gives the room an Old World feel.
- Plaster walls: lime plaster or tadelakt for a warm, hand-finished texture.
- Furniture-style vanity: carved or distressed wood with a stone top.
- Wrought iron accents: an arched mirror, sconces or a simple towel bar.
- Exposed wood beams: a natural touch in bathrooms with higher ceilings.
Colors and Materials
Start with warm, earthy bases such as terracotta, sand, cream and soft white. Then add color through tile in cobalt, teal, olive or saffron. For floors, terracotta, travertine and patterned cement tile are classic choices, and wood-look porcelain is a practical option near the shower.
Fixtures in oil-rubbed bronze, aged brass or matte black suit the look. A copper or hammered vessel sink adds a handcrafted touch. Behind the finishes, a full waterproofing membrane and a quiet exhaust fan keep plaster and stone in good shape for years.
Mediterranean Style in Smaller Bathrooms
A small bathroom in this style can still feel full of character. Put the pattern on the floor, keep the walls light, and add one arched niche or mirror as a focal point. A compact wall-mounted vanity and a frameless glass panel keep the room open. See real examples in our bathroom remodel photos.

Mediterranean Bathroom FAQs
What is a Mediterranean bathroom?
It is a bathroom inspired by Spanish, Italian and Greek homes, with warm plaster walls, terracotta or stone floors, patterned tile, arches and wrought iron accents.
What colors work in a Mediterranean bathroom?
Earthy tones lead the way: terracotta, ochre, cream and warm white, balanced with deep blue, teal or olive green in the tile or accents.
Is terracotta tile good for a bathroom floor?
Yes, when it is sealed properly. Unglazed terracotta is porous, so we seal it before and after grouting and give you a simple resealing schedule.
Does this style work in a modern home?
It can. A lighter take with plaster walls, one patterned tile feature and simple black or bronze fixtures blends well with newer homes.
Can a small bathroom have Mediterranean style?
Yes. Use patterned tile on the floor, keep the walls light and add an arched niche or mirror. These details add character without crowding the room.

We have done two major home renovations with Nathan and his team over the last few years. They are great to work with: very professional and responsive, so when we wanted to remodel our kitchen, we trusted them with the project. They completed the work quicker than the estimated time frame and within budget. We could not be happier with the outcome and we're already planning future projects with his team. We strongly recommend KN Remodeling for any home projects you may have!Posted on Google![]()

KN Remodeling did a fantastic job on a complete remodel of our kitchen-from planning to completion, the job was seamless, on time and budget, and we are delighted with the results. Nathan had very helpful suggestions and an aesthetic eye for detail. His crew was professional, reliable, meticulous in their work, and a pleasure to have around. The entire team was courteous and very respectful of our living area and left our space tidy at the end of each work day. I wouldn't hesitate to hire them again or to recommend them to family and friends. We feel lucky to have found them.Posted on Google![]()

We took A LOT of quotes on our kitchen refresh, and Nathan was the only one who wasn't pushy or threw out high-pressure sales pitches. He listened to our concerns and approached them realistically and offered options that were doable, and not empty promises. His work teams were very professional, worked diligently, and were never rude. They took as much care of our house as we would. Even when we pointed out certain imperfections and mistakes they were quick to fix and patch up. Our kitchen was done way sooner than we had anticipated, so that's always a plus. One of the things I really liked about Nathan was that he was always a phone call away and he was very attentive to our concerns. He never dismissed us or ignored us. He cared and he never let us down. We've had experiences with other companies that have been less than favorable, and what we disliked the most was being ignored when we noticed imperfections in their work. Even today, as the kitchen is finished and Nathan came over to do final checks, we noticed our drawer hardware was rusty (it was a refresh and not a remodel), and Nathan offered to send someone over to install new ones free of charge. I would wholeheartedly recommend this company, and especially Nathan, who I found to be an honorable contractor.Posted on Google![]()
