About Our Modern Bathroom Design
Modern bathroom design is disciplined rather than cold. The look depends on restraint: fewer materials, larger formats and almost nothing sitting out on a surface. What makes a modern bathroom work is not what you add but what you manage to hide, and that is a construction problem as much as a design one.
We build modern bathrooms around a curbless or low-profile walk-in shower with a linear drain, a rainfall head and often a built-in bench. Large-format tile keeps grout lines minimal and the room visually calm. Floating vanities create the sense of more floor, and recessed niches replace the shelves and caddies that clutter a shower. Hardware is typically matte black, brushed nickel or brushed brass, and the palette stays neutral so the room does not date in five years.
Recessing anything into a wall means knowing what is behind it, which is why the plan matters more here than in any other style. We map the plumbing and framing before committing to niche and vanity positions, run the waterproofing membrane properly at the curbless transition, and size the exhaust fan for a room where a large glass panel would otherwise fog and stay fogged. The result looks effortless, which is exactly the point.

Modern Bathroom Design Ideas
These ideas show up again and again in the modern bathrooms we build across Los Angeles:
- Wet room layout: shower and tub behind one glass panel for a clean, open look.
- Floor-to-ceiling tile: one large-format tile on every wall for a seamless finish.
- Backlit mirror: soft, even light at the vanity with no bulky fixtures.
- Wall-mounted toilet: a hidden tank frees up floor space and is easy to clean.
- Wood-tone vanity: walnut or white oak adds warmth to a neutral room.
- Smart controls: digital shower valves, heated floors and anti-fog mirrors.
Colors and Materials
The best modern bathrooms keep the palette tight. White, warm grey and greige make calm bases, while charcoal, black or a single bold tile add contrast. Porcelain slabs, quartz, honed concrete-look tile and terrazzo all suit the style and are easy to maintain.
Pick one metal finish and use it everywhere, from the faucet to the shower glass hardware. Frameless glass keeps sightlines clear. Warm wood or textured tile on one wall stops the room from feeling sterile, which is the most common mistake we see in modern bathroom design.
Modern Style in Smaller Bathrooms
Modern bathroom design is a natural fit for compact rooms. A floating vanity, a fixed glass panel instead of a swinging door, large tiles and recessed niches all make a small bathroom feel bigger. Light, neutral colors and a backlit mirror keep it bright. See real examples in our bathroom remodel photos.

Modern Bathroom Design FAQs
What is modern bathroom design?
It is a clean, minimal approach built on simple lines, large-format tile, floating vanities, hidden storage and a neutral palette, with very little left out on surfaces.
What is the difference between modern and contemporary?
Modern style follows fixed principles of simplicity and clean lines. Contemporary follows current trends. In practice the two overlap a lot, and most of our clients blend them.
Are curbless showers a good idea?
Yes, when they are built correctly. The floor has to slope to a linear drain and the waterproofing must run well past the shower. Done right, they are safe, easy to clean and age-friendly.
Which colors work best in a modern bathroom?
White, warm grey, greige and charcoal are popular bases. Wood tones, black fixtures or a single bold tile wall add warmth and contrast.
Can a small bathroom look modern?
Yes. Large tiles, a floating vanity, a frameless glass panel and recessed niches make small rooms feel bigger and calmer.
